Link equity is the authority and trust passed from one webpage to another through hyperlinks. In modern search architecture, link equity determines how high your website ranks in Google and whether your business gets cited as an authoritative answer in AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

At DNA Digital Marketing, we treat link equity as a core driver of online visibility and lead generation. However, not all links pass equal value. Quality, topical relevance, and structural placement decide how much authority actually flows into your critical business pages.

Link Equity

Link equity—historically referred to as “link juice”—is the SEO value transferred between pages when one site links to another. When a reputable website links to your domain, search engine crawlers and large language models (LLMs) interpret that link as a vote of confidence.

Think of backlinks as professional references. A recommendation from an industry leader carries far more weight than a note from an unverified source. Similarly, high-quality links transfer strong authority, whereas low-quality or irrelevant links move the needle very little.

To maximize search visibility, your digital strategy must balance two distinct categories of link equity.

1. External Link Equity

Link equity from external links

External link equity flows when an outside website links to your domain. Because you do not directly control third-party websites, search engines and AI models treat external backlinks as independent proof of your brand’s authority.

Key metrics evaluating external links include:

  • Domain & Page Authority: The overall credibility of the referring site and specific URL.
  • Topical Relevance: How closely the referring site’s industry aligns with yours.
  • Anchor Text: The visible, clickable text used to hold the hyperlink.
  • Organic Traffic: Whether the linking page receives real human visitors.

2. Internal Link Equity

Internal link equity flows when one page on your domain links to another page on the same domain. While external links build your site’s total pool of trust, internal links allow you to strategically direct that authority to your most important revenue-generating pages (“money pages”).Technical Insight: Leaked Google ranking documentation confirmed that search algorithms evaluate internal and external links using similar underlying scoring frameworks. Managing your internal link architecture is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve rankings without relying solely on third-party outreach.

Whether evaluating an external backlink or an internal page connection, five primary technical factors dictate how much value transfers through the link:

  1. Authority of the Source Page: Pages backed by high inbound link counts pass significantly more authority downstream.
  2. Topical Relevance: A link from a local commercial contractor to an architectural firm passes strong equity. That same link pointing to an unrelated finance blog passes very little due to a lack of contextual fit.
  3. Anchor Text Context: Descriptive, keyword-aware anchor text helps search bots and LLMs comprehend destination content. Note: Avoid exact-match keyword stuffing on external backlinks to prevent algorithmic over-optimization flags.
  4. Outbound Link Density: Every link on a page receives a fractional share of that page’s total equity. A link on a page with 4 total links transfers substantial value; a link buried on a directory page with 100 links transfers almost none.
  5. Placement & User Engagement: Under Google’s Reasonable Surfer framework, links placed naturally within main body content pass more equity than links isolated in footers, sidebars, or automated navigation blocks.

We recommend conducting an internal link equity audit twice a year to eliminate structural bottlenecks and ensure maximum crawl efficiency.

Step 1: Execute a Full Site Crawl

Run a technical crawler like Screaming Frog across your domain. Review the Unique Inlinks metric to identify high-priority service pages that suffer from low internal link counts.

Step 2: Eliminate Orphan Pages

Export your site structure and cross-reference XML sitemaps to locate “orphan pages”—URLs live on your server that possess zero internal links pointing to them. Connect valuable orphan pages back into your site hierarchy, or implement a 301 redirect to a relevant live page if the URL is obsolete.

Step 3: Maintain a Flat Click Depth

Check your site’s Crawl Depth. High-value pages should be accessible within 3 clicks or fewer from your homepage. Every additional layer of depth dilutes the authority flowing from your primary entry points.

Put Your Website’s Authority to Work

Your website may already be earning valuable attention—but without a clear internal-linking strategy, that authority may not be reaching the service and conversion pages that matter most.

DNA Digital Marketing helps businesses turn SEO efforts into a connected growth system. We audit your site structure, identify overlooked link-equity opportunities, strengthen internal pathways between content and core services, and build a content strategy designed to improve visibility and generate qualified leads.
